Motivation and encouragement have been in short supply lately. Sometimes, it’s difficult to keep a positive attitude when you can’t seem to get your career going, you don’t earn a paycheck, your kids can sometimes be… less that respectful, and more doors close than are opened. I’m into my third year of trying to turn my passion for writing into a profession; three years without success. I’ve written two novels in that time; both received many nibbles from agents and publishers, but no bites. Then, I turned to children’s books; wrote a few good ones, at least I thought so, and still nothing. I have received nice rejections (seems like an oxymoron) along the way, but no successes. Now, I’m trying my hand at nonfiction. I’m in the middle of that process – the torturous waiting game, checking the mail, watching my email… Ugh. If the Lord has instilled this drive to write within me (I started my first novel in the 3rd grade), then why is it taking so long to get somewhere with it? As you can see, I’m feeling a bit frustrated.
So, what should I do? Writing is the type of thing that I couldn’t stop doing if I tried (and I have). So, my brain automatically sends out the message Don’t Give Up! It’s ingrained, and anyone who’s ever had a dream or goal knows what I mean. Work harder. Do more. Give it more time, more effort…. My inner cheerleader comes to life and tries to kick me back into gear. And I will jump back in to it, after long days like this one end and a new light beckons me onward. But, what do I do in the meantime?
Often in life, I turn to the Bible to help me. Passages from the Bible pulled me through many of my anxiety problems, parenting issues, and general life situations from managing money to dealing with other people. So, why not this? What can the Bible tell me about pursuing my dream even when nothing seems to be going right? Here are a few verses that have helped me:
“The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they may stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.” Psalm 37:23-24
“The Lord says, ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you’.” Psalm 32:8
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10
“Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” Ephesians 4:20
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4
“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” Romans 8:28
“Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.” Romans 12:11
“Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win!… So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing.” 1 Corinthians 9:24, 26
“Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” Ephesians 6:7
“For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13
“Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
“God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another… Do it with all the strength and energy God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 4:10, 11
“My purpose in writing is to encourage you and assure you that what you are experiencing is truly part of God’s grace for you. Stand firm in this grace.” 1 Peter 5:12. (Out of context, but I still enjoy reading this one.)
These are just a few of many encouraging, motivating verses in the Bible. Just in rereading them, I feel better, stronger, and even more hopeful. If you have verses that have encouraged you, please share them in the comments section.
